A thyroid nodule is characterized by sharp borders and has in most cases regular geometrical shape. A hypoechogenic lesion in Hashimoto's thyroiditis has irregular, puzzle like borders while in the event of de Quervain's thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma the borders between discrete lesions and echonormal thyroid are blurred
