The positive predictive value of grooves and inclusions is much less in the case of oxyphilic cells. Therefore the diagnosis of a papillary carcinoma requires the presence of other cytological signs. Nevertheless, in most cases of oxyphilic variant the cytological diagnosis of oxyphilic tumor is not difficult.
