Ethanol sclerotherapy: thyroid cysts - Case 4

Nodular goiter

Next

Clinical presentation: A 60-year-old woman was referred for an evaluation of a recurrent cystic nodule. The cyst was aspirated four times in the previous 2 years.

Palpation: an elastic nodule in the right lobe.

Cytology resulted in benign cystic nodule. We suggested ethanol sclerotherapy instead of surgery.

Functional state: euthyroidism with TSH 0.66 mIU/L.

Ultrasonography: The thyroid was echonormal. There was a cystic nodule with echonormal solid parts in the right lobe.

Aspiration cytology resulted in benign colloid goiter.

Six sessions of sclerotherapy were performed. We demonstrate the fourth session.

Follow-up examinations: The patient had no complaints and the nodule did not refill until the last follow-up examination performed five years after the sclerotherapy.
