Hyperechogenic lesions in lymphocytic thyroiditis. Nodule or not nodule? Table1 - Case 8

There are two and one hyperechogenic lesions within a moderately hypoechogenic background, left and right lobe, respectively. They may be hyperplastic nodules or the only intact areas of the Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In most cases we cannot make a clear distinction. Greater the size, lower the sum, more regular geometrical the shape, more likely to being such lesions hyperplastic nodules. In this case the lesion in the right lobe is probably an intact part of the lobe less influenced by thyroiditis. As regards the lesions in the left thyroid both possibilities have equal chance. The term nodule has to be avoided on ultrasound report. . |
