QUICK TOUR - Pitfalls

Subacute granulomatous de Quervain's thyroiditis

Natural course of the disease. Table 1 - case 40
First examination:
the right lobe is painful
6 weeks after the first examination:
no complaints
12 weeks after the first examination:
the left thyroid is painful
14 months after the first examination:
no complaints
Right lobe

Left lobe

The typical course of the disease is demonstrated. The thyroiditis affects first one lobe. Weeks later this lobe is on the way of healing while the contralateral lobe becomes ill. Finally, both lobes become normal. The vascularization follows this order: at the time of pain the vascularization is decreased or absent while later in the course the vascularization became normal. The size of the thyroid presents similar changes: at the time of painful inflammation the thyroid was elarged while later in the course decreased in size.
