Clinical presentation: An 82-yr-old woman came to a follow-up examination. Total thyroidectomy has been performed for 15 years. Histopathology disclosed papillary carcinoma. The patient has got radioiodine therapy. Ten years later aspiration cytology disclosed recurrent disease in the right thyroid bed. Ethanol sclerotherapy was performed. The thyroglobulin level was 7.1 ng/dl before the sclerotherapy.

Palpation: no abnormality

Laboratory tests: TSH 3.17 mIU/L on daily 100 microgram levothyroxine, thyroglobulin 3.8 ng/mL, anti-hTG 11 U/mL.

Ultrasonography. There was hypoechoic mass in the left thyroid bed. The mass had lobulated margins. The volume of the lesion was 31.1% of the pre-treatment volume.
