The issue of large goiters - case 2078

Nodular goiter

Next

Clinical data: A 44-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a nodular goiter which was discovered on screening. A dominantly solid nodule was described on ultrasound screening.

Palpation: no abnormality.

Laboratory tests: TSH 2.33 mIU/L.

Ultrasonography. The thyroid was echonormal. There was an echonormal nodule which had cystic areas in the left lobe. The lesion has echogenic figures including back wall figures. There was an echonormal mass under the lower pole of the left lobe. This mass was larger than the left lobe.

Cytology resulted in benign cystic colloid goiter and in colloid goiter, cystic lesion and aberrant tissue, respectively.

Comment. The echonormal, relatively large mass under the lower pole of the left lobe was connected with a thin stalk to the thyroid lobe. It caused no complaints and did not extend substernal.
