Multinucleated giant cells are the most pathognomic signs of de
Quervain's thyroiditis. These cells may be composed of round follicular
and/or elongated epitheloid cells. While a multinucleated cell composed
of the former may be frequently observed in other thyroid diseases,
including papillary carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis,
multinucleated cells composed of epitheloid cells are rarely found in
other thyroid disorders. The multinucleated cell on the left is
composed of exclusively epitheloid cells, while the right one contains
round follicular (red arrows) and/or elongated epitheloid cells, as
well.
