Type of thyroid nodules according to echogenicity (I)
A hyperechogenic nodule
An echonormal-minimally hypoechogenic nodule

An echonormal nodule

A minimally hypoechogenic nodule

An echonormal-minimally hypoechogenic nodule

A minimally hypoechogenic nodule

A minimally-moderately hypoechogenic nodule

Moderately hypoechogenic nodule

The distinction of nodules according to echogenicity has only limited importance in the differenctial diagnostic. Echonormal nodules represent the only exception because the risk of malignancy in such nodules is practically zero. However, most malignancies occur in hypoechogenic and moderately hypoechogenic nodules, while around 7% of all malignancies are found in hyperechogenic nodules.
