The operated thyroid - Case 13.

Insignificant lesions in a resected lobe

Nodular goiter

Next

Clinical data: a 71-year old woman underwent bilateral subtotal lobectomy for Graves' disease 4 years earlier. The thyroid contained no nodule on histopathological analysis. She was referred for regular follow-up examinations.

Ultrasonography: a hypoechogenic thyroid with several discrete circumscribed areas corresponding to normal findings after surgery.

Comment: it is very important not to determine such areas as abnormal lesions. These probably represent lobules with diverse blood supply and have no clinical or oncological significance. If we use the term nodule for such irregularities, we cause absolutely unnecessary fear to the patient.
