Pap-smear, 400x. Another group of atypical pleomorphic cells are shown. These are elongated and have abundant cytoplasm. Atypia, even significant enlargement of thyrocytes is a frequent finding in patients with thyroid dysfunction. Hyperchromatic, pleomorphic cells are found frequently, as well. However, such elongated, pleomorphic cells with a loose chromatin structure are not included in the usual presentation of a hyperthyroid goiter.
