Rare forms of thyroiditis - Case 5: Granulation around surgical thread |
|
Clinical presentation: A 44-year-old woman was operated for Graves' disease 7 years ago. She was referred for aspiration cytology of a newly discovered recurrent nodule.
Palpation: a firm nodule above or in the upper pole of the right thyroid.
Functional state: euthyroidism on daily 75 microgram levothyroxine (TSH-level 1.07 mIU/L).
Ultrasonography: Both lobes were moderately hypoechogenic, inhomogeneous. There were two hypoechogenic lesions, one above the right thyroid and another one in the right side of the isthmus. They contained hyperechogenic patchy areas with bright hyperechogenic spots. Both lesions were avascular.
Cytological diagnosis: benign, granulation around surgical thread.
