The cytological pattern of these two cases is almost identical.
Dispersed cells with abundant cytoplasm and eccentric nuclei
predominate the smear. In both cases a few enlarged, pleomorphic nuclei
can be found. The only significant difference is in the shape of the
cells: medullary cancer presents polygonal while oxyphilic tumor does
predominantly round cells. However, this difference is not enough to a
safe cytological distinction.
