Other edifying cases - Case 15: A patient with a nodular goiter and agenesia of the left thyroid |

Clinical presentation: a 34-year-old man was referred for evaluation of a nodular goiter detected on screening.
Palpation: a firm nodule in the right thyroid.
Functional state: euthyroidism with TSH 1.58 mIU/L.
Ultrasonography: the right thyroid was echonormal and contained a moderately hypoechogenic nodule. The lesion presented an incomplete halo sign while did not perinodular blood flow. There was no parenchyma according to the left thyroid.
Cytology was performed from the lesion and resulted in follicular proliferation.
Combined sonographic-cytological diagnosis was benign follicular proliferation.
We suggested follow-up investigation. One year later the lesion increased in size and the patient underwent on operation.
Histopathology disclosed benign, hyperplastic nodular goiter.
Comments.

Thyroid agenesis is not a difficult diagnosis, we simple do not find thyroid tissue.

This case illustrates the superiority of color Doppler mode to gray scale method in the diagnosis of a follicular type tumor. The nodule presented halo sign but did not perinodular blood flow.
