Next

Clinical data: a 39-year-old man was referred for the evaluation of a suspicious nodule discovered on thyroid screening. He had no complaints.

Palpation: the right thyroid was firm but not tender.

Functional state: subclinical hyperthyroidism with TSH 0.01 mIU/L, FT4 17.6 pM/L, FT3 8.03 pM/L.

Ultrasonography: there were multiple hypoechogenic inhomogeneous lesions in the right thyroid. The border of these lesions was blurred. There was no blood flow within these areas on Doppler mode. The right thyroid was intact.

After the ultrasonography we asked her about her symptoms more thoroughly. She told that she suffered from an upper airway infection 6 weeks earlier.

Cytological diagnosis subacute, granulomatous thyroiditis.

Follow-up investigation: we did not prescribe any medication. The ultrasonographic pattern and the thyroid dysfunction turned to be normal three months later.
