Parathyroids may be located very infrequently within the thyroid. The only chance to recognize an intrathyroidal lesion as a parathyroid if the patient has a known hyperparathyroidism. This case illustrates this situation. Nevertheless, even considering the elevated parathormone level, the presented lesion was more likely of thyroidal origin than parathyroidal. The elevated wash-out parathormone level confirmed the parathyroid origin. The final proof was the histopathology and the further history of the patient: she underwent right lobectomy which disclosed a parathyroid adenoma within the thyroid and the parathormone has normalized after surgery. |
