PAPILLON COURSE on THYROID ULTRASOUND

Section 1 Introductory courses

How to do it?

About the course

The entire project is to create a complete, freely available, online course based on HD quality voice-over videos. By now, we have completed one Section that accounts for around half of the full course, which is aimed to cover ultrasound examination of the thyroid.

Structure of the course

The currently available Section 2 has eight Chapters. The Chapters, except for Chapter 1 which is an introductory talk, consist of 5 parts. These parts are the  Introductory video lecture  and the Manual  which complement each other. The section ' Courses ' summarizes and demonstrates the various ultrasound characteristics, their differential diagnostics in the form of comparative images.  Case  are the backbone; within Cases, you find case studies, voice-over, high quality video records of the original examinations, a real novelty. This is a continuously growing collection, this time 700+ videos are available. To best of our knowledge, there is no other collection that presents videos in a comparable amount.  Videolibrary  is very similar to the Cases section, however this is provided first without voice-over and FNA and/or histopathological diagnoses. These are aimed for practicing; at the end you will find a link to the voice-over variant of the video and the results of FNA and histopathology. You can test your skills by visiting  Exam  which is provided to the chapters Echogenicity, Borders and Intranodular figures.

Structure of Section 2

Students of the course

Course participants represent several groups of colleagues. In our opinion, anybody from beginner to advanced level, can benefit from the training. Below is a learning suggestion to suit different needs. But, of course, this can be customized according to individual needs.

Experienced ultrasound examiners

We present an up-to-date summary about the ultrasound characteristics, their role in differential diagnostics and classification systems. The Introductory video lecture and the Manual are the basis for you. It is also recommended for them to study the section on differential diagnostics. Probably for most of you, Cases can also be useful, as they provide a selection of patients investigated over decades in a thyroid outpatient clinic.

Endocrinologists and other clinicians who do not perform thyroid ultrasound, and do not plan to perform ultrasound themselves

Essentially, the Introductory video lecture and the Manual are the basis for you. The other sections are optional.

Colleagues who are beginners and want to perform ultrasound examination themselves

A semester-long, seriously busy program is a study of chapter of Nodular goiter. The present material serves as a strong the base of your training. Studying all the sections is recommended. Start with the Introductory video and the Manual. Then continue with the Course section and the related Cases. The three largest chapters (Echogenicity, Borders, Intranodular echogenic figures) may require up to 60 hours of learning time combined. Chapters on nonparallel orientation and extrathyroidal extension can be mastered in 15-30 hours.

Practical execution of an ultrasound examination cannot be mastered online. However, in the introductory chapter, we provide help on how to get started. If you can get half an hour of help from an experienced colleague, you will be able to find the thyroid gland and analyze the characteristics on your own. After 5-10 hours of independent practice, you will need another full hour of help from an experienced colleague. And here I am drawing your attention to a very important thing.  If you video record your ultrasound examinations, you will be able to discuss your findings later with an experienced colleague. One or more still images are insufficient.

If you decide to undertake the complete, one-semester program, please write an email to me. Together we can create a more personalized learning program.
