Other edifying cases - Case 6: A muscle fiber mimicking recurrent papillary cancer |
|
Clinical presentation: a patient - operated with papillary cancer 11 years before - was referred for a "recurrent papillary cancer" detected on carotid Doppler examination. She was regularly controlled and had no complaints or signs of recurrent tumor. Thyroglobulin (0.3 ng/mL) and anti-hTg level (below 20 IU/mL) turned to be normal.
Ultrasonography: revealed three hypoechogenic lesions in the left thyroid bed. Two of them were arteries while the third one resembled a lymph node or a thyroid lesion on horizontal view. Longitudinal view disclosed that the lesion in question is in fact a muscle.
Comment: it is very important that a correct US examination requires performing of two perpendicular views.
