Coarse calcifications are found more frequently in papillary carcinoma
compared to benign lesions. This finding has only limited practical
importance. In our study the difference did not reach the level of
significance. Nevertheless, in certain cases the presence of
microcalcification is of help in the diagnosis, e.g. in the last case
demonstrated above. In this Hashimoto patient, several hypoechogenic
lesions were present. One of them proved to be a papillary carcinoma;
it was the only one which contained coarse calcifications.
